Course

Royal Blackheath presents golf as it was intended to be played - strategic, engaging and enduring

The course at Royal Blackheath Golf Club is a classic 18-hole parkland layout, thoughtfully shaped to reward strategy, precision and sound course management.

Playing to a par of 71, the design reflects the enduring principles of James Braid, with strong natural routing, well-defined fairways and carefully positioned bunkering that demands considered shot selection. While accessible and enjoyable for golfers of all abilities, the course provides a searching examination for the accomplished player.

Set within mature surroundings in South East London, the course offers both variety and rhythm - requiring accuracy from the tee, imagination into the greens and discipline throughout.

History of the Course

The present course was first laid out in 1892 by Tom Dunn, one of the leading professional golfers and course designers of the late nineteenth century.

In the late 1920s, the layout was further refined by James Braid, five-time Open Champion and a member of the celebrated Great Triumvirate. Braid’s work strengthened the strategic character of the course, introducing the thoughtful bunkering and subtle design features that continue to shape play today.

In 2014, architect Ken Moodie oversaw a programme of enhancements, sensitively evolving the layout while preserving its historic integrity. The result is a natural parkland course that honours its architectural lineage while meeting the expectations of the modern game.
